You can get scanning abilities pretty early on that make getting ambushed by pods of enemies pretty much impossible, and if you set them up right snipers become team wiping agents of death, and that's before getting into the bs some of your other classes can do.

May 20, 2011 · So i beat the game and decided to try out XCOM 2 instead of playing XCOM 1 on hard. I hate the new percentages. They feel so arbitrary compared to xcom 1. Even if an enemy was very agile or whatever, in XCOM 1 they moved a lot of tiles in 1 turn but you wouldn't get lower hit percentages for no reason (like with chryssalids).
